Repairs You're Not Sure You Can Make Yourself

Before you call someone to fix these often intimidating issues around the home, we'll tell you how to do it yourself.

Toilets

Don't let your toilet become an uninspiring thing within the bathroom. Toilets are operated by basic mechanisms that are simple to comprehend. Most toilets problems, such as clogs or constant water flow and loud sounds, can be fixed by a quick purchase of a new part and some tweaks to the tank. Don't be scared to open the lid and look around.

Ceilings

Before you face the hassle of repainting your ceiling to remove water stains, you can try this trick: Spray the area with bleach and water (10% bleach), then wait for at least a few days. If the stain is something that's already old, you can apply a mildew and mold remover from a local retailer. You'll be amazed at how the stain will disappear within the following day. It can be used on smooth ceilings and those with textured surfaces.

Wear safety goggles and ensure that you cover your floors and walls by using plastic.

Floors

For repairing a squeaky floor under your carpet, find the floor joists using a stud finder. Then, put a trim screw to your carpet, the pad and subfloor, and to the floor joist. Make sure that the upper part of the screw does not have threads, or the subfloor will not be able to suck close to the floor joist. We prefer trim screws since the screws have a larger head to push down and to puck the carpet. If that happens, take off the screws and push it down. Continue adding screws until the squeak ceases.

How to clear clogged drains

The majority of drains that are blocked result from hair or grease, and you can clean them out by yourself. Avoid using those chemical drain cleaners and use a plunger to remove the blockage and cut down on the cost of a service call. The most serious drain clogs that occur within the outskirts that are in the plumbing of your home can be resolved without the help of a professional. The art of preventing blockages from happening in the first place is also an important DIY ability.

Drafts

If you notice the light creeping under exterior doors, it is also flowing out. Take a couple of packages of self-adhesive foam rubber weatherstripping and get to work to seal every door that leads to the outside. Are you already using weatherstripping but struggling with a large fuel bill? It could already be the right time to replace the strips put in place by the previous owners.

Caulk and grout

The bathtub's caulk is missing, or grout that is broken between tiles can be a cause of major moisture damage. It is possible to re-caulk your shower or tub and re-grout the wall tiles without contacting professional help.

HVAC

A regular maintenance schedule can help prevent HVAC issues. If you experience an issue, you can typically repair it yourself. If your AC unit is operating but is becoming noisy, you can correct the issue! If your furnace requires attention, you can do routine maintenance and even make repairs on your own.

Garbage disposal repair

A garbage disposal can be quite intimidating when running with the blades cutting up kitchen garbage. But, if your disposal gets stinky, fear not. It's simple to wash out the gunk and eliminate the smell. In the event that your splash guard requires replacement, you can complete it in just 20 minutes! If you have to replace the entire disposal, you can do it by yourself.
